| Teen Bible Study - b) The Nation of Israel | | Israel was a nation led by God-their spiritual leader. He was their King, their guide, their provider, their protector - He was everything that they needed. After coming into contact with other nations who were ruled by human kings, they decided they wanted a human king as well. God obliged them by choosing a king to rule over all Israel. (All Israel included the 12 tribes of Israel). When the first king, Saul, went contrary to the instructions of God, he was dethroned by God and David was chosen by God to be king. Even though David was chosen by God, he did not sit on the throne of Israel until after the death of Saul. Prior to David's death, Solomom, his son, was anointed to be King after him. God made a covenant (agreement) with Solomon that if he followed in the footsteps of his father David and lived in obedience unto God, He would establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever and he would not fail to have a human descendant of his to sit upon the throne of Israel. On the contrary, if he chose to live in disobedience unto God, Israel would be cut off as a nation and the beautiful temple built by Solomon as a place of worship unto God would be completely destroyed. Unfortunatley, Solomon went contrary to the will of God. After the death of Solomon, His son Rehoboam took charge. He was very unfair to the people and this resulted in the Kingdom of Israel being divided into two groups - one under the leadership of Rehoboam and one under the leadership of Jeroboam. Rehoboam ruled over two tribes called Judah and Jeroboam ruled over ten tribes and they were called Israel. (1st Kings 1- 12) There will not be another King to rule over all Israel -the people of God - until Jesus Christ returns and sets up His kingdom on earth for His millennial or 1000 year reign on earth. At the end of His reign, He will completely eradicate sin from the earth, thus preparing the way for the Kingdom of God to descend from heaven and for God to dwell with us. (Revelation 21-22)
