| Teen Bible Study - Who Are The Samaritans? | | Under the leadership of Saul the capital of Israel was established at Gibeah, which was located at the northern outskirts of present-day Jerusalem. Under the leadership of David, the capital of Israel was Jerusalem. Under the leadership of Solomon, the kingdom of Israel was divided into 10 tribes representing Israel and 2 tribes representing Judah. Solomon’s servant Jeroboam was King over Israel in Schechem and Solomon remained King over Judah in Jerusalem. A lot changed after the death of Solomon. When Omri was King of Israel, he moved Israel’s capital from Schechem to Samaria. At the final captivity of Samaria by Shalmaneser, the cities of Samaria were completely depopulated and remained in this state for a number of years. The king of Assyria brought people from Babylon and from other places to re-populate Samaria but he did not bring any of the Israelites back. Due to this, the new Samaritans were not Israelites but Assyrians by birth or slavery. They did not believe in the God of Israel and in fact worshipped many other gods. God was very displeased with the behaviour of these new Samaritans and allowed the wild beasts that multiplied during the time when there was no one in Samaria to be a torment to them. The people explained to the King of Assyria what was happening to them in this new land so he sent one of the captive Israelite priests to teach them how they should fear or respect the Lord. They feared what the Lord could do but they did not serve Him. In fact, according to 2nd Kings 17: 41, they feared the Lord and served their graven images, both their children and their children’s children, as did their fathers, so do they unto this day. The Israelites called Samaria home at one point but that home was taken over by foreigners - the new Samaritans - who worshipped other gods. Hence their disregard for the new Samaritans.
