| Devotionals - Dare To Be Different | | Samuel was a young boy living in the temple with the Priest, whose name was Eli. His mother Hannah, who was married to Elkanah, was unable to have children and she promised God that if He blessed her with a son, she would give him back to God for all of his life and his hair would never be cut.
1st Samuel 1: 11 (NIV) And she (Hannah) made a vow, saying, "O LORD Almighty, if you will only look upon your servant's misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the LORD for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head."
Even though Samuel lived in the temple with Eli, he was surrounded by young people whose sin was very great before the Lord.
1st Samuel 2: 17…the sin of the young men was very great before the Lord for men: for men abhorred (despised, disrespected) the offering of the Lord.
The young men they are talking about are the sons of Eli. They didn’t follow in their father’s footsteps. Instead of respecting the house of God and the offerings made unto God, they did whatever they felt like doing and brought shame and disgrace not only to their Daddy, but also to the name of God.
In spite of Eli’s sons disobeying him and disrespecting God, Samuel ministered before the Lord. In other words, he did the work of God under the direction of Eli the Priest.
1st Samuel 2: 18 But Samuel ministered before the Lord, being a child, girded (clothed) with a linen ephod (priestly clothing).
Be a child of God. You do not have to follow others when they are doing something wrong – no matter who they might be. Just think for yourself and do what you know is right.
Study the Bible and God will teach you what is right from wrong, through His word.
